Mistakes to Avoid When Selling Books Online

A good way to make extra money, and perhaps even a full-time living, is to sell used books by means of sites such as eBay and Amazon.

It’s incredibly easy to enroll as a bookseller on Amazon.com.  Once joined, you just list the books you have for sale and how much you are asking for them.  When you make a sale, Amazon processes the customer’s payment and sends you the money.Your biggest work will involve packaging and shipping the book to your buyer in a timely manner.

If you are starting out as a seller on Amazon, there is one major mistake you should avoid – that is, unless you are a masochist. Assuming you’re wanting to make money, don’t attempt to resell books that are or ever were bestsellers.

If you follow the usual pattern of new Amazon booksellers, you’ll likely go to yard sales and spend time in thrift stores to acquire your stock. As a novice you might think, “This book was a best seller. That means it’s popular (or at least once was) so I should be able to sell it fast for a nice price.”  Wrong.

Former bestsellers including even very recent ones are a drug on the market. They probably had massive print runs, which means there are copies aplenty out there – and tons of copies being sold on Amazon itself.

As an experiment, I just looked up the first blockbuster that came to mind today: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.  You might recall that this was a incredible hit a number of years ago.

Anyway, at the time of my checking, there were 245 used copies of Midnight being offered on Amazon.Astonishingly, a significant number of the copies were being offered for sale at a mere 1 cent apiece!  With that kind of glut, do you think anyone is going to pay you more than a few cents for your copy?

Instead of grabbing up bestsellers in your book hunts, try to find books that didn’t sell a whole lot of copies but that might appeal to a specialized audience. This also means that you should generally avoid fiction and stick with non-fiction titles.

The most efficient way to run a business selling books through Amazon is to identify how much a used book will bring before you take it home from the thrift store or yard sale. Nowadays, you can check this right there in the store (or at the yard-sale table) with a handheld device loaded with a special database and an attached barcode reader.

There is an excellent, downloadable ebook available over the Web that goes into detail on where and how to get hold of the necessary devices and database that will make your usdeb-book business truly efficient and profitable. You can read an independent review of it here: Can You Still Make Money Selling Used Books on Amazon? Or, you can go straight to the book’s web site to check it out.

If you would rather not go the Amazon route, there are many other ways to make a profit from books online. Four additional, completely different methods are outlined in this article.

Buying Collectibles on the Internet

Collectors are a particular lot in that they harbor a fanatical interest in things in which other people don’t immediately perceive the value. But, regardless of what those who are not colloectors think, there is a huge market for rare antiques, artwork, comics, stamps, sports memorabilia and items derived from popular culture. Up till now, acquiring these items was somewhat difficult. Now however, the internet has facilitated a means of locating these items.

At one time, the only way to purchase collectible comic book items was either at auctions, through mail order catalogues or trade shows. Obviously, it’s a lot more work to visit a trade show than it is to pull up a webpage. Using a website’s checkout function is also a lot easier than having to write out a check and mail it to a PO box. Obviosly, the additional ease of placing an internet order is a major plus when it comes to finding and ordering collectibles on the internet.

Also, the internet has seen prices drop on several rare collectibles. The reason for this is that on the internet locating the items is not a difficult task. Up till now, if a rare collectible such as a 1950s comic book was only available through ten stores in the United States, {the majority of people} would not have been aware of the existence of the comic book unless they went and visited one of the stores. These days, all 10 stores could put the comic book up for sale on Ebay simultaneously. So, even though the comic is a rare item, the scarcity factor is reduced and this brings the price down.

And speaking of price drops, Ebay’s listing fees are very minimal as opposed to placing mail order ads. Instead of paying $500 for a magazine ad, Ebay charges a very minimal listing fee and a small percentage of the sale. This reduction in overhead costs is another factor that lets the seller lower prices as well. So, buying on the internet is a much more cost effective option than following the traditional method.

A word to the wise however: it is difficult to determine an item’s condition if one is buying online. Even items that display a photograph of what is for sale may not entirely depict an accurate representation of the condition. Therefore, it is crucial that you make sure there is a return policy in effect. If the item is not in the condition you were led to believe then you should have the option of getting your money back.

It is safe to say however, that most collectible dealers are not problematic to deal with and they do not sell poor merchandise. So, most online collectible purchases should proceed smoothly and will meet all expectations.

Dropshipping And Price Drops Can Mean Profitable Ebay Business

Price drops are a terrible thing to have to make as a business owner, especially if you are selling on eBay and making the drops simply to stay competitive. Many times, when you have to drop prices to move inventory, you will lose money. Wholesale product suppliers can help you to eliminate this situation from your business operation. They will also drop ship items directly to the paying customers, thereby eliminating the need for you to pay to ship products.

Eliminating the need to drop prices is a great profit maker for any eBay business. Wholesale dropshipping companies make this process really easy. They give you a list of dropshipping products to choose from and all you have to do is select the ones you wish to sell, copy and paste their html code to your eBay site, and you are ready to go. You process the orders from your customers and accept payments, then forward the orders and payments (at your wholesale price) to the supplier and you are done with the whole process. The supplier will then ship the items right to your customers for you. How much easier can a genuine online business get?

Price drops used to be a problem for sellers who stocked their own inventory. These drops in prices happened when the sellers found themselves with inventory that was not selling. Purchasing physical inventory is always a gamble, because you run the risk of it becoming outdated or going out of style. Using drop ship wholesale suppliers has eliminated this problem for many sellers. Not having to worry about this aspect can make the business run much smoother, because you will simply have more time to concentrate on other aspects of running your business.

Also, never again will you have to worry about how price drops will affect your ability to recoup the shipping charges from your customers. In the past, if you had to drop your prices, then you were also faced with the problem of paying to ship the items to your customers. Now, wholesale drop shipping suppliers who are willing to drop ship items for you will include the shipping charges in your wholesale price so that you can easily see what your profit margin is. This practice also allows you to run your business more worry free, therefore you can concentrate more on the selling of the products.

If you pay attention to the news, especially the financial news, then you know that today’s economy is significantly worse than it was last year. This downturn in the economy means that business owners have to be smarter about their expenses. They have to watch and carefully stick to a budget. Even drop shipping rates are under close scrutiny. If you are a business owner then you need all of the information possible on your shipping needs. Thankfully there are plenty of books and programs out on the market today to help you. Cheap and Free Pictures of Dogs – A Hidden Money Creator?

It could amaze you, but among the simplest items to sell on eBay is pieces of paper. But only if you know the right type of paper to offer people.

Old pictures–which can be gotten quite inexpensively and many times at no cost at all–are among the easiest paper items to sell. Now, there is one subject that virtually guarantees sales: dogs.

Yes indeed, it is true. The humble dog can actually put food on your table!

Finding and selling dog pictures to enthusiasts for this kind of art can be a rewarding business. And surprisingly, few people have tapped into this so far. So, there’s room for more folks to get in and make money.

Want to know the great thing about this kind of business? You can in many cases acquire your stock (dog pictures) for next to nothing.Next, you go to eBay (you do have an account, don’t you?) and resell the pictures there.

Did you know that some people earn enough at this to do it full time. Dogs are practically the perfect subject in which to specialize, but some others have proven to do almost as well. Trains and sailing ships, for example.

It’s not as hard as you might think to find old dog breed photos and drawings. Where are they? Answer: Old photographs and old drawings, pulled from old books and old magazines.

Hard to believe, but it’s possible to sell a single picture from an old book for many times what the whole book cost. The main thing you must do is to aim at finding people who may be seeking the particular subject of a given picture.

For the best-selling picture subject, look no further than the noble dog. A number of buyers will collect many different kinds of dog pictures. Others only want to buy pictures of one or maybe two particular breeds. For example, a fan of weiner dogs might have hundreds of paintings and prints of them hanging throughout his house.

It’s not difficult to find old books that are full of wonderful images of dogs. Some of them could contain as many as 40 or 50 such plates.

When you find such a book, you can carefully remove the pages containing the illustrations, and mat them them individually. Believe me or don’t, but you may then easily be able to find a buyer for them for up to a hundred dollars each!–on eBay.

A tip: To get top dollar in this business, find and re-sell pictures of the hunting breeds of dog. They are the most popular among collectors. But photographs and line art of virtually any type of dog can be sold for a good amount on eBay.

Besides dogs, and trains and ships as mentioned, also be on the lookout for books with images of antique cars, pastoral scenes, world cities and horses. You will find there are many other good sellers as well.

To be successful in this, you must take time to learn where to find old books with the images that will sell. You must also learn how to remove the images so as to prevent damage. If you learn to mount your pictures and to present them in the most attractive manner possible, you will be ahead of the game. The authoritative source on all of this is How To Make Money By Tearing Up Old Books And Selling Them On eBay.

So what is the bottom line? So, are you hoping to find a novel (and fun!) way to make money on the Internet? Well, then, the dog may truly be your best friend. (And here’s an objective look at the business of selling paper online.)

Confederate Paper Collectibles Fetch Real Money on eBay

No doubt, many Americans know about Confederate money. They’ve seen genuine bills exhibited in a Civil War museum, perhaps.  Perhaps as kids they played with reproduction Confederate dollars purchased from a toy store. Relatively few, though, have ever seen a Confederate bond, or even know what one is.

Confederate war bonds raised money for desperately needed victuals and supplies for Rebel troops during the war. They were a means for the Confederate government to raise money by getting its citizens and others to lend to it.  A person would loan money to the Confederate government and in return receive one of these bonds, a piece of paper inscribed with a written promise to pay back the bond purchaser–along with a certain amount of–beginning on a certain date in the future.

With the CSA’s demise, those loans never got repaid, of course, and the certificates languished in closets and trunks for years.

Today, though, those Confederate bonds are sought-after collector’s items. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (along with other types of paper items) on eBay for good money.

If you’ve ever owned a Confederate bond, you’ll understand why lots of folks are trading in them. Start with the fact that they are very decorative. They’re physically pretty large–very much more imposing than a Rebel dollar bill, for instance–and elaborately decorated. They look nice in a frame. Not to mention, of course, they give us a small segment of the past. Most people could not afford to buy honest-to-goodness Civil War rifle in the present day, but Confederate bond certificates are within the reach of just about every War Between the States devotee.

Confederate bonds were put out in a range of face values. They furthermore differed from one another in terms of the inscriptions and graphic devices they used.

From an era in which even a run-of-the-mill banking certificate could be an exercise in extreme ornamentation, the Confederacy’s bonds were flush to the metaphorical gills with flourishes, including such staples as fields and cities, mythological figures, and, naturally, military leaders and other southern heroes.

Take as an example a $1,000 face-value Confederate bond that I purchased and had framed a number of years ago. It is lovely, with words printed in an italic script and, in the certificate’s most prominent location, a vignette of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. You may recall that Gen. Jackson was sent to his reward in the confusion of war, after accidentally being shot by a Rebel soldier near Chancellorsville. He was a southern hero, and it was predictable that his image would come to be looking out from a Confederate bond.

Southerners weren’t the only persons to buy the Confederacy’s war bonds. Some people across the sea in England, as well as other parts of Europe, did too. Perhaps they were people whose sympathy in the American Civil War rested with the Confederacy and its cause. Or quite possibly they were simply wagering on the war’s final outcome.

Buying and selling southern war bonds has become a noteworthy activity within the hobby of scripophily, which refers to collecting old financial instruments (including stock certificates, bank notes and railroad bonds, for example) for their historic and artistic value.

If you’re a history enthusiast–or if you’re simply looking for a different kind of “art” with which to decorate your home–learning about Confederate bonds and acquiring a handful select examples could transform itself into a fund and reasonably affordable pastime.  Furthermore,It is also an excellent area to investigate if you like the idea of earning money by selling “paper”–books, magazines, antique prints and so on.

Now, leave it to an enterprising English woman to become the foremost expert on making good money–even earning a living–selling pieces of American paper, not only old money and bonds but even pages torn out from old magazines.  You can read more about her surprising eBay paper selling method here.
