I put a lot of my thought into developing strategies for search engine optimization (SEO) for my business’s many traditional websites and blogs.  Basically, an Internet business has only two choices when it comes to improving SEO.  One of those is to handle your optimization efforts in-house, while the other is to hire a consulting firm to assist you in the project.  I have three primary concerns about such companies.  Many of the consultants are not well informed about legitimate research about how the search engine algorithms determine rankings.  Some of them seem to prefer to respond to the latest rumor rather than relying upon solid empirical data; perhaps they just lack the necessary analytical skills.  Some of them are nothing more than linking farms that disguise themselves as SEO consultants.  These ill-purchased links occasionally allow your site to show short term gains, but those advances disappear about the time your check to the consultants clears the bank.  The last of my reservations about these companies, at least the last that I will mention in this article, is that they tend to be overpriced for the limited value that a business typically receives.

You should already know what my recommended solution is from reading between the lines of my first paragraph:  Take the time to educate your company team unless you want to hire the few very expensive geniuses in the field, such as Leslie Rhode, Brad Fallon or Dan Thies–if you can get them to work for you at any price.

If you’re going to follow my informed recommendation, you will need to take the time to educate your in-house staff on the fundamentals of search engines and optimization for them, and you must also be willing to spend some money for well designed software to assist in the gathering and analysis of the immense amount of data that will be required.  I have a review of the most important SEO software on one of my websites.

I have long been a long term supporter of SEO Elite (see sales page).  This Callen designed program has been a leader in SEO software for years.  I generally recommend it without any reservations.  However, I know that the company plans to release a new version of SEO Elite in the near future, so I hesitate giving it my full endorsement right now, unless you can find out if those of us who own the original will be able to upgrade SEO Elite 2.0 at a reduced rate or unless you decide to by another Callen miracle solution, Keyword Elite, because you can buy both at the same time for a substantial discount.  The combined price is a steal!

The other top level SEO software is Leslie Rohde’s Optilink (you’ll land on the sales page).  Leslie Rohde is the patron saint of optimization, a genuine genius.  Rohde taught me much of what I know about search engine optimization.  Pardon the intrusion of my ego, but I know a heck of a lot about the subject.

To those companies that can afford the expense, I strongly recommend buying both products (as well as the amazing Keyword Elite).  But if you are in a financial pinch and want to begin with just one of the two, I’m going to break with my longstanding position of suggesting SEO Elite and recommend Optilink, instead–temporarily, at least, until I have an opportunity to thoroughly test SEO Elite 2.0.

Optilink and SEO Elite are very modestly priced for such robust software; they cost only around 0 each.  If your cash flow problem is temporarily significant, Rohde’s company offers a much less sophisticated program called Optispider that is only around half the price of the better Optilink.  If you really must scale back to that level, you might also consider the similarly priced (0) Traffic Travis, by Mark Ling.  If you follow the link in the first paragraph of this article, you can get to my comparison of all of these alternatives, and there are direct links there to each of the software products.

I am a frequent user of both SEO Elite and Optilink, and I believe that they compliment each other marvelously.  They allow me to save hours upon hours of gather the data, and they make valuable contributions in assisting me in making sense of all the data they collect for me.

You have decided to start an Internet business. From the very start you should plan to implement a coherent plan to obtain email addresses from your site’s visitors in order to build a continuing relationship with them.

Be sure that when you publish your newsletter you are providing for the need of the subscriber as well as their interests. In other words, stay focused upon the theme of your business’s website.

2) Ensure that you have well written, information riddled and content rich articles. You articles will be the body of your newsletter and that they should be able to excite your readers as well as provide information. Articles should be well written and checked for errors such as spelling and grammatical errors for it to look professional and believable. The trust of your client to you and newsletter is at stake here.

3) Always be certain of any facts or figures within your newsletter articles. Errors will erode the trust of the readers and will be reflected in your bottom line.

5) Don’t use copyrighted materials such as pictures and articles. This is outright plagiarism, and you may get into a lot of trouble for this. You can lose your business and get sued over copyright infringement. If you do not have the time to write your own articles, you can out source the writing for a reasonable fee. All your investment in writing and publishing articles will be well worth it when you see your list build up and your traffic increasing.

Many people who are interested in starting an online business assume that because the country is in a major recession right now, this is not the time; however, I ask you to consider the facts:

1. As with most of the major life decisions, e.g., getting married, having a child, starting a business – there is never a “right” time; there is only today.

3.  Obtain Necessary Tools

The proper tools make any effort much simpler.  Spend the cash to get the basic hardware you need to do your job.  And, if your financial position allows, spend some extra money to get the equipment that ( while not totally mandatory ) will simplify your occupation and make your life typically much less intense.

Invest in a sound, computerized marketing management system and let automation take care of lead management and order accomplishment tasks for you.

4. Hire a Administrative Assistant ( s )

Identify tasks that are straightforward, recurring and not among your key processes.  Think about outsourcing them to a domestic or international assistant (which is a lot more cost-benefitical than you may think).  Possibilities for outsourcing include article promotion, web design, SEO, backlinking, lead follow-ups, etc.

8.  Eat Healthy

Eat a healthy, healthy diet loaded in fruit and vegetables.  Reduce or eliminate caffeine ( coffee, black and green tea, cola drinks, and chocolate ).

9.  Workout

Working out relieves tension, increases oxygen to the brain, and offers a a brief interlude from stressful situations.

10.  Rest & Relax

Try to take time as a normal part of your day to slow down and do something that you enjoy, even if it is just for a short time.

If so, you’re in good company.  Since the beginning of the recession in December, 2007, more than 5.7 million jobs have disappeared.  According to the Associated Press (AP), after the May 8th release of the April, 2009 unemployment numbers:

• 13.7 million people were out of work in April, 2009, and that was the biggest number since 1948
• 539,000 jobs were lost in April alone
• 8.9% unemployment (the highest since September, 1983), but if workers who’ve been laid off and just given up or taken part-time work, are included, that number jumps to 15.8% – the highest since 1994

If you’ve been out of work for more than a month, you may be feeling angry, or maybe even a little overwhelmed as you see the pages of the calendar turn, with still no job on the horizon.  In addition to this immediate financial crisis, you’re probably concerned about the long term effects as well (e.g., college education for your kids, a comfortable retirement for you and your spouse).

There are essentially three choices in this situation:

1. Panic
2. Keep doing what you’ve been doing (the same things that haven’t yet found you a new job), or
3. Try something different

Option 1:  Panic

The first option, panic, is entirely counter-productive, and should be avoided at all costs.  A little fear is a good thing; it can even help us save our lives in dangerous situations, by engaging the fight or flight response. Panic, however, overloads our system, resulting in fuzzy thinking, confusion, fatigue, and gets us nowhere.

Option 2:  Keep Doing What You’ve Been Doing

If doing what you have always been doing had been successful for you, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now.  If you don’t change what you’re doing, you can only expect to get more of what you already have.

I don’t know about you and your industry, but people in my industry – good people – have been unemployed for more than six months, unable to find a comparable job to the one they left; or even, any job at all.  After diligently answering help wanted ads and sending out countless resumes, what results have they realized?  Zilch, nada.

In this recession, people aren’t even getting callbacks about jobs they’re qualified for.

Option 3:  Try Something New
