Stress and Fight or Fright Reaction
Lets look at three different scenarios.
A sales rep is having a difficult time during the recession. His recent records show poor sales. He is about to meet a big and important new client and this could be an opportunity that could save his career. Success will decide whether he is still in employment.
A man is desperately and madly in love with this attractive and popular woman. To him there is no future without her but there are other men trying to attract her attention. He has a ring, the red roses lie by the door and table carefully set for two. She is due any minute and he will ask her to marry him and he does not know whether she will say yes or no.
Late at night a woman is walking home. The streets are poorly lit. Suddenly she hears footsteps ahead of her. A group of people wearing hoodies is walking towards her. She now hears footsteps behind her. She turns around to see a group of youths walking towards her.
Although there is potential danger in only one scenario, a person becomes very focussed and alert. This is the fight and fright reaction.
This is a reaction in humans and animals that developed a long time ago to protect us from life threatening dangers. The hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisone are released during the reaction. These hormones cause a remarkable change in the body.
The heart rate speeds up, the breathing become faster and deeper, the mouth becomes dry, the pupils dilate, skin becomes cold and clammy and hairs on the back of the neck stand up.
You may even want to vomit, open your bowels or urinate. This is the brain trying to lighten the load to move faster during ‘flight’.
These changes are preparing the body for action. You become alert and aware. All your senses are sharpened. Your sense of smell, sight and hearing are all sharpened. Your body is now functioning at it optimum.
Your heart, beating faster pumps more blood to the muscles and brain. With faster and deeper breathing, more oxygen is transported by the blood to the muscles and brain. In addition blood is temporarily diverted from other important organs such as the gut, the kidneys and the immune system to enable more blood to the muscles.
. The only problem, however, is that the brain cannot differentiate between real and percieved dangers or threats. The reaction is the same.
The fight or fright reaction is triggered in all three scenarios.
Panic attacks are severe episodes of the fight or fright reaction and, to the individual during an attack the danger or threat is very real. Rationality suddenly disappear and there is no where to run to or no one to fight.
In stress, the fight or flight reaction is triggered even thought there is no threat to our lives and can harm the body. Persistent stress caqn cause disease.
Knowing the effects of the fight or fright reaction on stress will help you make some sense about the symptoms of stress you experience with stress.
Stress control the easy way.
Count from one to ten.
Mother tells her children this when they become angry. It is very effective.
Count to ten when you recognise stress coming. You can do it quietly or speak it out. It does not matter.
This is often all you need to do.
Many prefer to count down instead and as they count down to zero, it feels as if their stress is slowly going down.
Take a deep breath.
Inhale taking deep long slow breaths. Breathe in slowly through your nostril and fill your lungs completely. Exhale through your mouth slowly after holding your breath to the count of four.
Repeat a few times and as your breathing becomes slower, a calm and relaxed feeing takes over. Like counting, this is a quick and easy stress controller.
In addition, as you breathe in and hold your breath, you visualise all the stress in your body slowly moving into your lungs and as you exhale, you are forcing stress out for a calmer and more relaxed you.
You can also use a stress relief squeez ball.
Take a walk.
This is a good way to gain stress relief quickly.
When the task is very stressful, get up and walk away from it. I do not mean walk away from it for good. You are removing the problem temporarily. It gives you time to come to grips with is as you calm down.
You may want to do something else during this break. This takes the stressful problem away from the forefront of your mind and allow your Subconscious Mind to find solution options. The eponymous Morgan Stanley, when he could not find a solution to a problem, would suddenly drop what he was doing and play a game of solitaire. It was’nt long before in his mind, several ideas came foward.
A walk in the park is a good idea. Being near to nature is very relaxing. Your body’s frequency synchronises with the earth’s frequency. Your brainwave drops to this frequency for peace and tranquillity. You feel calm and relaxed. You can get the vacuum cleaner out and clean the house. Put the problem out of your mind. You will be surprised how different you feel about your task in front of your.
In addition exercise relieves stress.
It is recognised that exercise reduces stress.
Talk to someone or write a journal.
This is a good stress buster. Talking to someone is in a way sharing your problem. If that someone is experienced in your field, you may get some invaluable tips. A wider approach to your problem develops. It may make you aware that you are not alone. You have shared your problem and will not feel isolated.
There is no better stress buster than a simple thought or idea in your mind that will lead to the solution to your problem. Suddenly you become energised and focussed because you can now see success as the only outcome. Your stress will changes to the desired stress that produces maximum efficiency.
Writing a journal is also a good stress buster. It highlights the specific items that stress you. Transferring it into words on paper means you can either keep or discard. It releases the stress. So if you are alone, or there is no one to talk to when things are going wrong, write it down in your stress journal. Ink on paper is the next best thing.

Successful Stress Management Tips
Now I am sure that we would all admit to becoming a little stressed from time to time. It is knowing what to do about it which is the problem for most of us. I am the type of person who used to stress about the smallest of things, this stress affected my sleep, my skin and my work life. I now, after studying the subject of stress for the past two years, have come up with ways to help me to cope with and to reduce the amount that I stress. I am going to write about these ways in this article.
I have had a good chat with myself during recent times, having to admit various weaknesses if you like; one of which was my overall attitude to life. For whatever reason I always used to think in a very negative way; I was always rather down and depressed and believed that I was an unlucky person. In reality I was actually fine but as you may be able to tell I would feel sorry for myself.
I am now able to think in a far more positive light and this has helped me no end.
Meditation has also helped me to think in a more upbeat manner. The main area where I find meditation helps is to enable my mind to think in a much clearer manner.
Another successful stress reduction strategy is too start to exercise on a regular basis. This is good for many other reasons as well as stress including aiding fitness and weight loss. I have a pet dog now and taking it for around six walks a day helps to to keep fit and to also get out of the house when things start to get a bit stressed.
All of these things have helped me in many ways including to overcome stammering; this was a problem that I had to endure for eighteen years of my life. At the time, before the internet was born, it was quite difficult to receive credible stammering advice, which just added to the overall frustration.
I am now able to live a happy, confident, fluent life and am working as a well known web promotion specialist.
Stress and Hypnotherapy.
Without doubt hypnosis is a very effective stress treatment of stress. Stress develops when an individual feel he does not have the required resources to cope with a task he is confronted with. Hypnosis changes perception, belief and ability to cope so the subject no longer feels he is no longer incapable.
Dr. Lipton said that up to 90% of diseases are caused by stress. Vital organs are straved of nutrients and oxygen by persistent stress. This is fine on occasions but when it becomes persistent, diseases are likely.
It is not the situation you confront that causes stress but by the way you perceive this situation and whether you feel you have the power in you to deal with it. hypnotherapyis a very effective treatment for stress because it changes your perception, expectation and belief.
Following hypnotic treatment, extremely stressful tasks are transformed into tasks you can easily do because, you now know that you have the resources to successfully carry out anything you are faced with little effort on your part.
During hypnosis, you become deeply relaxed and drop down to brainwave level theta. At theta brainwave level, the barriers that block unwanted information from reaching the Subconscious Mind, ease their tight grip and the hypnotherapist can alter belief, attitude and expectation.
The power and safety of hypnosis as a stress and anxiety is undeniable. Meditation is an effective tool and recommended for stress. It is, however, very difficult to see how a stressed person can relax, and if he or she cannot relax, meditation becomes very difficult. It is better to have hypnosis as an immediate treatment and then introduce meditation for the long term and overall life enhancement.
Anyone who has experienced stress will tell you stress is an unpleasant thing. It takes your libido away. It steals enjoyment out of your life. Anger, rage, anxiety and depression are symptoms you can develop. During stress you become less creative and makes unnecessary mistakes.
The most serious problem with stress, however, is that it shuts off nutrients to important organs by triggering the fight or flight reaction and stimulating the heart. This is why research has shown it is responsible for 90% of all diseases. In industry there are millions of days a year lost through stress and the cost to the health providers is enormous.
Hypnosis can change your attitude to stress and it is not just a treatment for your present stress but it gives you belief and coping skills to control stress in the long term.
In a hypnotic session, powerful post hypnotic suggestions are given not just on how to cope with your current situation but generally on all aspects of your life. He is likely to say, “You are calm and relaxed. You will have no fear when confronting any situation and know that if it can be done, you are very capable and competent to do it.” This type of post hypnotic suggestion will help you to adopt the attitude, “What is fast and best way of doing this?” rather than, “This task is beyond me.”
So instead of drugs, counselling, psychotherapy or CBT, have hypnotherapy for safe and better control of all your stress problems. Remember hypnosis is nothing more than a state of heightened awareness and your brain becomes alert and receptive. The Subconscious Mind is not analytical or filters like the left brain. The Subconscious Mind simply accepts positive suggestions by the hypnotist while you remain in a calm relaxed altered sleep.
Help Controlling Stress and Anxiety
What’s stress?
The build up of stress from anxiety can become a major problem and there are many reasons which may make a contribution to this. These mainly occur thru daily living.
It is possible to discover through an individual’s life just how they can cope with stress and anxiety. Medical methods as well as natural methods are the primary ways to manage stress and anxiety.
The Medical Method
Stress symptoms may be relieved by tablets from your health practitioner or through therapy programs in order to find the simplest way to cope with stress and anxiety. Lots of victims find that mixes of these are the only way to control stress and anxiety.
However, using medicine can be considered as a damaging method to deal with stress and anxiety as it doesn’t resolve the original problem; it merely addresses the signs of stress and anxiety.
The problem with the medical method to manage stress is that there is a likelihood that reliance on medication may occur. This poses more issues as you try and manage stress and anxiety.
Medical methods are thus helpful in dealing with the outward signs. However they can lead to you more long-term problems.
The Natural Method of Relieving Stress and Anxiety
The natural paths to manage stress and anxiety do not involve the use of medication. Alternatives to medical strategies include aromatherapy, acupuncture and massage. They are an effective way to manage stress and anxiety because they act as a healing device.
How do you work out when you’re feeling stressed
One good way to control stress and anxiety is through recognising what stress is, what it means for you and in what circumstances these feelings occur. When you’re able to identify the situations that make you stressed you will begin to feel more relaxed, recognising that you are in control of your feelings.
Many folks manage stress and anxiety through planning their days. Contingency plans therefore help thru knowing what to expect across the day.
Stress Levels Can Monitor Health
Stress and your health are closely related.
Stress could be defined as almost any change to your usual routine. Getting that promotion at work is stress, just as much so as being made redundant from your job. The tragedy of losing a loved one can create stress just as much as the news of becoming pregnant can cause stress. No matter where you look or who you look at, usually you will see the signs of stress.
Stress causes chemical changes within the body especially with regards to hormone levels.
Hormone level swings can then result in even more stress. This makes women particularly prone to experiencing stress. Typical hormonal changes during puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and even the menopause can cause further stress in addition to the pressures of daily modern life.
Any of these occurrences can create difficulties in any woman’s life.
It is believed that stress is the unseen cause of many of today’s health problems. It can a precipitator to many ailments from headaches to sleeplessness. There is even evidence to suggest that stress is connected to outbreaks of acne. The connection between stress and acne outbreaks has been noted for years and the addition of hormonal imbalance would explain that connection.
Scientists are constantly studying how stress affects your health. It has been shown that the likelihood of catching colds increases with the level of stress being experienced due to a reduction in the performance of the immune system.
Basically, stress can be linked to many things, but not everything that you hear (like it being a total acne cure in itself) isn’t necessarily true. Simply put, stress may be linked directly or indirectly to many health issues.
To completely eradicate stress from your life would be impossible but there steps you can take to control stress.
Stress management tools can improve health in the long run. For example, develop a healthy lifestyle. Eat the right things and engage in a little exercise. Believe it or not, this does help. You also can take a “time out” for yourself. Its called: Relaxation!Enjoy yourself for a change, slow down, take a long walk or even take a hot bath. Relaxation really does help to relieve the stress and can also be good for your health. Your heart rate slows when you relax. If you are suffering from high blood pressure – slow down, take it easy and try to get in some relaxation time.
How do I relieve stress?
There are many ways that you can relieve stress, even if it is for a short period of time. Revisit an earlier hobby. Choose a pastime or activity for the sheer pleasure of it. It could be anything from basket weaving to painting or even sculpture. Your stress levels will drop noticeably because it is something that brings you pleasure. When people enjoy doing something they don’t think about all the stressful issues in their lives. Their mind is on what they are doing at that time, which in turn lowers the stress level.
Stress can be detrimental to your health and well-being. Take time out from the world, even if it is for only an hour. If you do this, you will help to decrease your stress level and improve your health at the same time.
Reduce Your Stress and Learn To Be Happy
Taking too much of anything is bad for the health. In small amounts stress is actually healthy for you, as it could help to keep you functioning at your best. However, stress that seems a little too much could take a physical, as well as mental, toll to your well being. Stress should be managed in order for depression or anxiety to be prevented.
So how should you do it then? The following are tips and advice to help in managing and preventing stress.
Write it out, schedule it out, and above everything else, try to relax.
It is wise to write down everything that seems to be beyond your reach. You will find an organized-to-do-list much easier to keep track of than having errands all crumpled up in your head. Writing down your ideas, and putting a specific schedule and time to do them, helps anyone manage activities one chunk at a time. Crossing out a duty that has already been accomplished is very rewarding and could actually help you feel more relaxed when busy doing the other tasks at hand.
Relax,focus, and take it slow.
At least, try not to expell too much energy on activities that are currently not priorities. This is in order for your energy to be not easily expended on the tasks that are not that important, at least for now.
Delegate, delegate, delegate.
You need not do everything all at once, and you need not do all of your tasks on your own. Ask for help, get help, or pay for help. When there is a feeling of being overwhelmed that is cropping up, hire someone to weedwack the yard or get a sitter for your children. The feeling of being pressed to complete something on time will somehow be eliminated if tasks are delegated. It can take the burden off of unnecessary worry and anxiety. Moreover, it is easier checking up on how things are going, than worrying yourself sick doing everything on your own, all at once.
make sure to give yourself a well deserved reward.
You deserve it. Furthermore,it is completely necessary that before getting on to the next tasks and activities, no matter how big or small, to acknowledge your efforts and accomplishments. It will greatly reduce stress and could even put you in a better mood for doing the next task.
Give yourself a break.
You will need it to be more productive. It is necessary to give yourself a ten to fifteen minute break during your work. Go visit a café nearby, take a quick walk, or do anything in getting your mind off work, at least for a while. This is necessary to refresh and recharge. Believe it or not, you can also stay in your work and sit with your eyes closed as you visualize a peaceful landscape or a relaxing scene. Hum your favorite relaxing tune if you like.Your mind and your muscles will love you for these stress free moments.
Be cool and relax. Doing so makes you healthier, happier, and a lot more productive.
Relax With The Help Of Back Massager
You won’t find many things that are good as back massager when it comes to stress removal. You can enjoy in a massage at a gym or a spa, but you will find them to be pricey. But it is much better to invest in a hand held massager that will cost you exactly the same. That way, you will have hours of fine massages at home. I agree that a back massager may not give the benefits of a full hand massage, but it will definitely help you get rid of all those knots from your back and remove the stress you’ve been gathering all day long.
It’s easy to find a handheld massager in some of the stores near your home, and using one of them will be even easier. Muscle relaxation and knots removal will be easy, you only need few batteries to power up those hard rubber nodules and make some vibrations. In case you want to treat your muscles the best way possible, get a model that has heat massage available.
In case there is some pain or even a knot in your back, use a massager against it and after 10 minutes the vibration will remove it all. Any muscle that you can reach can be treated with personal massager, but if you can’t reach it, get someone to do it for you. You can make any day a fantastic day to relieve stress.
Another option is to get a massage chair so you can traet your legs and your back. A full body massage chair typically has a group of rollers installed into the back of the chair that will roll along your spine as well as hard rubber nodes to pressurize certain areas of your back. You will find some models that have foot and calf massager with them so you can do a bit more with them.
You will find different programs and settings on massage chairs so you can have several different massage types. We use different massage types to relax before we go to bed, refresh ourselves in the morning and eliminate stress. With your own massage chair it is possible to custom-design the program that works best for you.
