Mickey Rourke at the Independent Spirit Awards

Another year, another Oscar ceremony. On the whole the award winners were given to the bookies’ favourites. Slumdog Millionaire swept the board and Kate Winslet finally got the Academy’s recognition she deserves. The nights biggest shock, which frankly disappointed me, was that the crazy and unpredictable Mickey Rourke didn’t add to his Golden Globes, BAFTA and Spirit triumphs as expected. But I for one was hoping that Mickey would get to spice up the night with another nutty acceptance speech.

The award eventually went to Sean Penn for his brilliant portrayal of gay rights activist Harvey Milk. It would be harsh to say that Sean Penn did not deserve to win. On the contrary, Milk was a great film and Penn’s role will live long in the memory I suspect. But am I the only one that just loves the crazyness that Mickey brings to the often staged and insincere PR stunt that is the Oscars?

So many of the celebrities on the red carpet turned up, as always, perfectly groomed in sponsored outfits and monotonous black tuxedos.  Mickey Rourke, on the other hand, turned up in a messy looking white suit. Of course he also wore his trademark designer sunglasses which have become part of his image in the awards season. The silliest part was the amount of times he mentioned his dead pooch Loki, who passed away recently and whose image Rourke displayed on his necklace in tribute!

It was all gearing up to another unpredictable and slighlty mad acceptance speech if he’d have won.  Who knows what he would have come out with on the stage, chihuahua memorial necklace, glasses and all? His performance at the Golden Globes will live long in the memory. And more recently he brought the house down at the independent Spirit awards the night before the Oscars – see the video above.

I suspect there was more than a little politics involved in denying Rourke the Oscar. Mickey himself had predicted he woudldn’t win because he’s pissed off too many hollywood hotshots in the past. “I stupidly said acting wasn’t a job for a real man. I threatened producers, raged at directors, forgot my agent’s name. I really burned my bridges. And a lot of people have long memories,” Mickey predicted on the Friday before the ceremony.

You gotta give it up for the Pennster however, his speech was certainly an interesting one. He started out by saying thank you to “you commie, homo loving sons of guns”! Penn then pulled out a small scribbled bit of paper, donned his prescription glasses, and after a few thank-yous proceeded with an impassioned plea for equal rights for gays and against the ban on gay marriages. Not quite as entertaining as Mad Mickey would have been – but better than gushing and thanking his mother for bringing him into this wonderful world.

3. To protect themselves from flash photography. The number one predator of the simple celebrity is the vicious and merciless paparazzi - its natural for celebrities to think about defending themselves. The bigger the celebrity, the more of these deadly adversaries will congregate around them. The paparazzi's primary offensive weapons are their huge flashes, predominantly used to startle their prey and cause gradual yet irreversible damage to their already ruined eye balls (see number 5 for more details on this). In fact over millions of years celebrities who wear sunglasses have been more suited to survival (much lower suicide rates) than those without, and they have therefore evolved to be more likely to shade their eyes.
4. To hide their atrocious drunken make up / red eyes / wrinkles. You'd be surpised to know that this is actually done to protect the fans rather than the celebrity. If we were exposed to the true state that celebrity eyes end up in after all night binges and long term sun damage, we'd be so horrified that our entire view of the world would crumble around us. Yes, ladies’ glasses of the rich and famous are there for our sake. Believe me.
5. Drugs make your eyes hurt. Now these guys have a tremendous weight on their shoulders, being role models for the rest of us, and this understandibly takes its toll and results in massive levels of drug abuse. Substances such as tetrahydrocanabinol and opiates cause the pupils to dilate. This means normal daylight or even a streetlamp, harmless to you and eye, are very painful for celebrities.
