The Pig in the Python

For years, the people born during the two decades after WWII have been referred to as “Baby Boomers”.  The US Census defines a Baby Boomer is “someone born during the demographic birth boom between 1946 and 1964″.

This demographic includes roughly eighty million members with amazing purchasing potential.

Lots of us, particularly advertisers, believe this group to be a homogeneous one; however doing that is really a mistaken approach.  Traditionally the class has been said to be composed of nonconformists, as defined by the decade of the 60s (e.g., free love, peace-niks and war protesters), but many constituents are essentially quite conventional in their sentiments and conduct.

People born during this timeframe are varied: most (but not all) are now parents; some are grandparents and/or “empty-nesters;”  others are single, taking care of an elderly parent, separated, gay, or belong to extended or alternate lifestyle families.  Some are still full-time employed, some retired, others addressing significant thought to retirement.

Transformers Alter Everything They Contact

There is, however, one distinctive that has exemplified this cohort – they are transformers.  Because of their numbers, and relative wealth, they have had a renewing effect on life and economy in the US crossing the past 6 decades.  In fact, writer Doug Owram has called them “a shockwave,” and author Landon Jones has referred to them as “the pig in the python”.

This cohort has revolutionized almost everything as they have moved thru their teen years, early maturity, their roles, the economy, etc.  – and there isn’t any need to think that they’ve terminated their metamorphosis on our culture.

I’m expecting that the latest sphere to be altered by this group is retirement.

I recall that as a child, I believed anyone aged fifty, or more, was “old” but present-day, demographers consider fifty to be the beginning of Early Middle Age, and agree that Old Age doesn’t begin until age seventy five.  Currently, Americans at age 50 will probably live another 35 years, and therefore, be “retired” for twenty years or longer – so what are they going to do with all that time?

During previous years, the period of retirement was often comparatively short-lived and distinguished by deteriorating fitness, limited funds, and few choices; however, for this bunch of nearly eighty million Americans, those inhibitions no longer pertain.  In their 30′s, they bragged about “never growing old,” and now, it’s up to them to prove that claim.

What are they intending to do with an additional two or three decades of active aging?  Modern diet and medical care have greatly extended that time period when people remain healthy and strong (for instance, my mother is in her 90s, lives alone, and still  drives her own vehicle).

How Retirement Is Being Modified

Are the “Boomers” going to be willing to drag out the rocking chair, sit on their balcony, and see the world pass them by?  I believe not!

Generally, members of this generation are on the path to self-actualization (as Maslow employed the term):

• A lot of them have a lot of things they want to attain yet in their lives.
• Considering they’ll have 20-30 years of time to fill, they will have an interest in a wide variety of leisure activities (e.g, travel, golfing, at-home entertainment).
• As a effect of all this time, they also want to stay fit enough to like that time – so they will be very interested in products and services that can help them stay fit and robust.
• A lot of them will really “reinvent” their careers – starting that job or occupation they have always dreamed about, but had to put off due to family or other obligations.
